NeuroStar TMS in New York for Depression

Depression can be debilitating and affect every part of life, and when antidepressant medications have not worked, it helps to know there are other options. At Manhattan Restorative Health Sciences, founded by Dr. Tim Canty, we offer NeuroStar Advanced Therapy, an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment that uses transcranial magnetic stimulation for depression. If you have tried medication without the relief you hoped for, NeuroStar TMS in NYC may give you another path forward, and a consultation is the first step toward recovery.

Why Choose MRHS for NeuroStar TMS

NeuroStar has one of the largest clinical data sets of any TMS system, and our team's job is to use that track record well rather than just have the equipment. Every NeuroStar plan here starts with a physician-led review of your medication history and prior treatments, since NeuroStar's added clearances, for OCD, for anxious depression, and for adolescents, only matter if your case actually fits one of them. Our Midtown East office is set up for the standard weekday cadence a full NeuroStar course requires, close enough to Grand Central that a session fits into a lunch hour rather than eating up a half day. And where NeuroStar is not the right protocol, the same clinical team also runs accelerated, 5-day, one-day, and MagVenture-based treatment, so the recommendation is based on your case rather than what one machine can do.

What Is NeuroStar Advanced Therapy?

NeuroStar, made by Neuronetics, is an FDA-cleared TMS system used to treat major depressive disorder. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy was first cleared by the FDA in 2008 for adults with major depressive disorder. It has since received additional clearances, including for OCD and anxious depression in 2022 and, in 2024, as a first-line add-on treatment for adolescents ages 15 to 21. It is a form of transcranial magnetic stimulation that uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation, without anesthesia and without medication.

NeuroStar TMS does not require anesthesia or sedation, and it is not a medication, so it avoids the systemic side effects that often come with antidepressant drugs. Treatment is delivered in our office while you sit comfortably and awake, and you can drive yourself home and return to your usual activities the same day. You can also read more about our approach to depression treatment.

How NeuroStar TMS Works

During a NeuroStar session, a treatment coil rests against your scalp and delivers repetitive magnetic pulses to the left prefrontal cortex, a region linked to mood. These pulses gently stimulate underactive nerve cells, and over the course of a full treatment series the aim is to help restore healthier patterns of brain activity connected to depression.

Most patients describe a tapping sensation on the scalp during treatment. You remain awake and alert the entire time, and many people read, listen to music, or simply rest. Because NeuroStar for depression is non-invasive and does not involve medication entering your bloodstream, most patients tolerate it well and continue with their day right after each visit.

NeuroStar TMS vs. Regular TMS

A common question is what separates NeuroStar TMS from other TMS options. NeuroStar refers to a specific system built by Neuronetics, with its own coil design, treatment protocols, and one of the largest bodies of clinical data behind it. Other TMS platforms, such as MagVenture TMS, use the same underlying principle of magnetic stimulation but differ in equipment, coil geometry, and available protocols.

For most patients, the more meaningful decisions are the treatment protocol and the experience of the clinical team rather than the brand name alone. Alongside standard courses, we also offer condensed schedules such as accelerated TMS, 5-day TMS, and one-day TMS for patients whose circumstances call for a faster timeline. During your consultation, we will talk through which system and schedule fit your history and goals.

Is NeuroStar Safe and Proven?

NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is FDA-cleared and supported by a substantial body of published research and years of real-world clinical use. Because it is non-invasive and non-systemic, it avoids many of the side effects associated with antidepressant medications, such as weight changes, sexual side effects, and fatigue.

The most commonly reported effects are mild and tend to ease within the first week or two of treatment, including scalp discomfort or headache around the treatment area. Serious side effects are uncommon. As with any TMS treatment, NeuroStar is not appropriate for people with certain non-removable metal implants near the head, which is one of the reasons we review your medical history carefully before beginning.

Who Can Benefit from NeuroStar TMS in New York?

NeuroStar TMS is often considered for adults with major depressive disorder who have not found adequate relief from antidepressant medication. It may be a good option if you have tried one or more medications without success, if you have experienced difficult side effects from medication, or if you are looking for a non-medication approach to add to your care.

NeuroStar is not a fit for everyone, and a consultation is the best way to find out whether it suits your needs. During that visit we review your diagnosis, treatment history, and overall health, and we answer your questions about what a full course of NeuroStar for depression would involve.

How Long Is a NeuroStar Treatment Course?

A standard NeuroStar TMS course typically runs about six weeks, with sessions on weekdays. Individual sessions are relatively short, often around 20 minutes or less depending on your prescribed protocol, which makes it possible to fit treatment around work and daily responsibilities. Many patients begin to notice changes in mood, energy, and motivation within the first few weeks, though timelines vary from person to person.

For patients who cannot commit to a six-week schedule, we also offer condensed formats such as accelerated TMS and 5-day TMS, which compress treatment into a shorter window. We will recommend a schedule based on your clinical needs and your availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NeuroStar TMS and regular TMS?

NeuroStar is a specific TMS system from Neuronetics with its own coil, protocols, and one of the largest clinical research bases in the field. Other systems, such as MagVenture TMS, rely on the same magnetic stimulation principle but use different equipment and protocols. In practice, the treatment protocol and the experience of your clinical team usually matter more than the brand alone.

Is NeuroStar safe and proven?

Yes. NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is FDA-cleared and supported by extensive published research and years of clinical use. It is non-invasive and does not involve medication, so it avoids many common antidepressant side effects. The most frequent effects are mild scalp discomfort or headache that typically fade within the first week or two.

How much does NeuroStar TMS cost, and does insurance cover it?

Many insurance plans cover NeuroStar TMS for major depressive disorder, often when certain criteria are met, such as prior medication trials. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary by plan, so our team will help verify your benefits and explain what to expect before you begin treatment, and we will walk you through your options.

How long is a NeuroStar treatment course?

A standard course usually runs about six weeks, with short weekday sessions, often around 20 minutes or less each depending on your protocol. Many patients notice changes within the first few weeks. For those who need a faster timeline, we also offer accelerated TMS and 5-day TMS options.

Does NeuroStar TMS hurt?

Most patients describe a tapping sensation on the scalp during treatment and find it well tolerated. You stay awake and alert throughout the session and can return to your normal activities, including driving, right afterward. Any mild scalp tenderness usually eases as treatment continues.

How soon might I see results from NeuroStar for depression?

Timelines differ from person to person, but many patients begin to notice improvements in mood, energy, and motivation within the first few weeks of a NeuroStar TMS course. Your clinician will track your progress throughout treatment and adjust the plan as needed.
