What is Spinal Cord Stimulation?

Pain is reduced because the electrical pulses modify and mask the pain signal from reaching your brain

Spinal cord stimulation is a treatment option that works by stopping pain signals as they travel up your spine prior to reaching the brain. A small device, similar to a pacemaker, called a Spinal Cord Stimulator, sends mild electrical pulses to the nerves in the area where your pain originates. The pulses reduce the strength of the signal being sent to your brain, which then processes it as pain.

This method of treatment can help patients whose chronic back pain has had limited success with other treatment options and can also help reduce the need for opioid based medications. Because this is an invasive procedure, it is important that you weigh your options and find the right provider to perform the implantation. At CSP, our doctors are some of the brightest minds in the industry and way ahead of many others in the field. When alternative treatments fail to provide relief, the Comprehensive Spine Pain Center is here to help.

Listed below are a few external resources about Spinal Cord Stimulators that we offer at the Comprehensive Spine Pain Center of New York.

  • SPRINT® Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) System Overview

    • The SPRINT Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) System is the only percutaneous PNS device FDA cleared for both chronic and acute pain, including post-operative and post-traumatic pain. SPRINT is a minimally invasive and non-opioid neurostimulation device that is prescribed by a physician and placed in the back or extremities to deliver mild electrical pulses to a targeted peripheral nerve for a treatment period of up to 60 days. In studies, SPRINT has demonstrated significant and sustained pain relief in most patients for at least 12 months.

  • Proclaim™ DRG Neurostimulation System from Abbot

    • A common cause of chronic pain is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). CRPS is nerve damage that’s usually caused by an injury. Pain in the limbs may cause them to swell or change in color or temperature. Patients with confirmed nerve injuries are categorized as having CRPS-II (also known as causalgia), while patients without confirmed nerve injury are classified as having CRPS-I (previously called reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome or RSDS). To help people with chronic pain finally find relief and live healthier, fuller lives, Abbott launched the Proclaim™ DRG Neurostimulation System. This DRG stimulation therapy involves surgically placing a stimulator that targets the dorsal root ganglion to relieve pain of the lower limbs due to CRPS. Individuals have a hand-held iPod controller that changes the stimulation settings within prescribed limits.

  • HF10®

    • HF10® is a next generation spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system offering a wide range of benefits. HF10 has demonstrated significant relief for both back and leg pain. It can be left on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no driving or sleep restrictions, because it calms the nerves while allowing you to feel everything you should. Combined with a 10+ year battery life and t=requiring limited to no daily remote usage, HF10 is a superior option to consider for SCS.
